A common element of support for a doula is answering questions for clients regarding the unknown changes that are occurring to their bodies, especially the ailments that bring discomfort. Here is a few of the most common and tips to give your clients!

1. Morning Sickness

Morning sickness, characterized by nausea and vomiting, is common in the first trimester.

Tips:

  • Eat small, frequent meals to avoid an empty stomach.

  • Keep crackers or a dry cereal by your bedside to snack before getting out of bed.

  • Sip ginger tea or ginger ale to ease nausea.

  • Avoid fatty, spicy, or overly sweet foods.

  • Consult your doctor about taking vitamin B6 or anti-nausea medication.

2. Fatigue

Pregnant women often experience fatigue due to hormonal changes and the extra work their body is doing to support the growing baby.

Tips:

  • Listen to your body and get plenty of rest.

  • Take short naps during the day, if possible.

  • Practice relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises or meditation.

  • Exercise regularly, with your doctor's approval.

  • Maintain a well-balanced diet to provide energy.

3. Heartburn and Indigestion

Heartburn and indigestion may occur due to hormonal changes and the growing uterus pushing on your stomach.

Tips:

  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals.

  • Avoid spicy, acidic, or fatty foods.

  • Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid carbonated beverages.

  • Don't lie down immediately after eating.

  • Ask your doctor about safe antacid medications.

4. Constipation

Constipation is common during pregnancy, and it can be exacerbated by hormonal changes and slower digestion.

Tips:

  • Include fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes in your diet.

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Engage in moderate physical activity daily, if approved by your healthcare provider.

  • Ask your doctor about over-the-counter fiber supplements or stool softeners.

5. Swollen Feet and Legs

Many pregnant women experience swelling due to increased blood volume and fluid retention.

Tips:

  • Elevate your feet and legs whenever possible.

  • Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and avoid tight clothing or elastic bands around your ankles.

  • Exercise regularly, with your doctor's approval, to improve circulation.

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out excess fluids.

  • Limit your salt intake to reduce fluid retention.

6. Backache

Backaches are common during pregnancy because of the additional weight of the growing baby and changes in posture.

Tips:

  • Use a supportive cushion when sitting for extended periods.

  • Practice proper posture when sitting, standing, and lifting.

  • Lift items with your legs and avoid twisting your back.

  • Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees for extra support.

  • Engage in low-impact exercises, such as prenatal yoga or swimming, to help alleviate back pain.

Contact your healthcare provider if you are concerned about any symptoms during pregnancy. They can offer additional guidance and make recommendations tailored to your specific needs. And remember, these pregnancy ailments are temporary, and soon you'll have the joy of holding your new baby!
